A charitable organisation called 'Elephants Without Borders' did an aerial survey that found 87 elephants were killed for their tusks. According to conservationists,?deaths of these elephants happened just a couple of weeks ago. The charity predicts that approximately one-third of Africa's elephants have been killed in the last 10 years and Tanzania has lost around 60 percent of its elephants in the last five years.

The country has been taking many initiatives to conserve elephants. In order to keep poaching in check, Botswana has armed anti-poaching units, but these units have now been disarmed. This has drawn poachers to Botswana which has world's largest elephant population and it also happens to be an open season for poachers.
The number of dead elephants could be even higher, as the Botswana Wildlife Aerial Survey 2018 is reportedly only half-way through.
