It's literally raining gold in one of the coldest corners of Earth.?According to experts, Mount Erebus, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, emits approximately 80 grams of gold every day, valued at about ?5,000 (or $6,000, approximately). Believe it or not, this is happening and nature's definitely having a chuckle.
Situated in Antarctica, Mount Erebus, the southernmost active volcano on Earth, is releasing minute fragments of crystallised gold along with gas, steam, and rock, as per reports.?These specks have made it as far as 999 kilometres away from Erebus, proving just how powerful the eruption is.
Stop before you get any ideas. Any human who even dares to think of venturing there should know that conditions here are not safe. Temperatures here can fall as low as low as -50C, according to some experts.
Located on Ross Island in the Ross Sea--and having acquired its name from Captain Sir James Clark Ross who first discovered it in 1841--Mt Erebus is not for beginners.?Antarctica houses an estimated 138 volcanoes of which Erebus is the tallest, with a summit of 3,794 metres. So, if it's not the gold that does you in, the summit sure will.
According to?NASA's Earth Observatory, the volcano sits on a thin slice of crust, which means?molten rock rises more easily. That's probably another reason why it's so easy for the specks of gold to fly and land much farther than anyone else would estimate.
