The population of the majestic Asiatic lions living in the Gir Forest in Gujarat is up by almost 29% and, geographically, the distribution area is up by 36%, claim reports. The good news was shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter and Instagram.?
He wrote: 'Two very good news:Population of the majestic Asiatic Lion, living in Gujarat¡¯s Gir Forest, is up by almost 29%.Geographically, distribution area is up by 36%.Kudos to the people of Gujarat and all those whose efforts have led to this excellent feat.'
The population of the wild animals has gone up from 523 in 2015 to 674 in 2020.?The same time period also saw a 36% increase in the distribution area of the lions from 22,000 sq km in 2015 to 30,000 sq km in 2020.
Presently, Asiatic lions live in the protected areas and agro-pastorial landscape of Saurashtra which covers nine districts in Gujarat.
