Samay Raina has become the latest target of cancel culture after Ranveer Allahbadia's crass joke on his YouTube comedy show?India's Got Latent?sparked an online uproar. Amid the social media backlash, many of Raina's previously posted tweets and clips have resurfaced, with netizens scrutinizing every remark he has ever made. From politicians to actors, social media influencers to internet personalities, many have weighed in on the ongoing controversy, joining forces to condemn the comedian. As the backlash gains momentum, another tweet from 2022 has resurfaced, in which Raina expressed his fear of facing cancel culture from the left. The tweet was posted in response to another alleged offensive joke he had made at the time.
The tweet had Raina, born into a Kashmiri Pandit family, bashing followers of the left wing, whom he had dubbed 'woke' in his previous tweets, after backlash against his 'abortion joke.'
He wrote, "Fear of cancellation from the left is why we don't have comics like Andrew Schulz, Jimmy Carr, Dave Chapelle, and Ricky Gervais in the Indian comedy scene. Don't worry. I'm here to change that. Jab tak Jantha saath hai, yeh log kuchh nahin ukhaad sakte."
After an Instagram user shared the 2022 tweet about the comedian fearing the left, many users in the comments section highlighted how he is now instead being cancelled by people who mostly follow right-wing ideology. One user wrote, "The irony is most of the leftists are in his support." Another wrote, "In India, cancel culture comes from the right."
In 2022, just days after the US Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe vs. Wade judgment, thereby ending women's abortion rights in the country, Samay Raina made a series of jokes about the topic, which were met with widespread criticism from netizens.
In one tweet, Raina wrote, "Parso maine aadha ghanta sochke meri girlfriend pe ek funny tweet likha tha, usko pasand nahi aaya toh usne delete karwa diya, kal ko jab main abortion karwaane bolu tabh mat bolna my body my choice." This roughly translates to: "Yesterday, I spent half an hour thinking and wrote a funny tweet about my girlfriend, but she didn't like it and made me delete it. If I ask her to get an abortion tomorrow, she shouldn't say, 'My body, my choice.'" The tweet was perceived as insensitive and dismissive of women's reproductive rights, sparking outrage online.
Amid the controversy and legal issues surrounding his show?India's Got Latent, comedian Samay Raina finally broke silence on the matter on Wednesday.
He wrote, "Samay wrote in his statement that recent events have been 'too much' to handle for him. He wrote, ¡°Everything that is happening has been too much for me to handle. I have removed all Indias Got Latent videos from my channel. My only objective was to make people laugh and have a good time. I will fully cooperate with all agencies to ensure their inquiries are concluded fairly. Thank you. (folded hands emoji).¡±
