A 48-year-old man who is dating his grandfather's 103-year-old widow has talked up about how their relationship developed.?
Mart Soeson, an Estonian lawyer, has been in a relationship with Elfriede Riit since 2013, yet he understands why some people may doubt their partnership.
Since their affair became public, some have accused Soeson of being with his other half solely to obtain a visa to reside in Australia, where Riit lives. However, the pair, who lived together until Elfriede had to go into a care facility, say their 55-year age difference is irrelevant to them and that their 'exclusive committed long-term' relationship is pure love.
In a statement to the Daily Mail, he said: "What started out as a wholesome bond I had with my late grandfather's widow slowly but surely turned into a very meaningful and loving relationship."He went on to say, "Yes, I am aware of the age gap. And I understand it's a concern for some folks."?
"But, in general, an age gap is an issue between an older lady and a younger man. It's never an issue between an older man and a young woman, but I can't change that attitude."
Soeson was hoping to obtain a permanent resident visa in Australia based on their relationship, but his application was denied. The couple has brought their case to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Sydney.?
In a declaration included in his appeal, Soeson stated that it wasn't love at first sight for the couple, noting that they started off as friends before developing a deeper connection.?
The statement went on to say: "We had much in common and many reasons to spend time together under the circumstances."?
Soeson stated he began spending time with Riit after his grandfather died, but later returned to Estonia. However, he told the tribunal that he 'immensely' missed her and returned to Sydney on vacation in 2000 and 2007, and then once a year from 2008 until 2013.?
During his previous visit, the couple expressed their feelings for each other.?
