The 97th Academy Awards featured a James Bond tribute, with four musical acts performing Bond-themed songs. While the performances were mostly well-received, Raye's rendition of Skyfall sparked a mixed reaction online. Why, you ask? Well, Raye's performance has now drawn comparisons to the legendary vocals of Adele, who sang the original song.
The James Bond tribute at the Oscars featured performances by BLACKPINK's Lisa (Live and Let Die), Doja Cat (Diamonds Are Forever), and Raye (Skyfall). Raye's performance sparked mixed reactions on Twitter, with some praising her and others criticizing her.
One user criticized the Academy, writing, "If they were really serious about this James Bond moment, they would¡¯ve gotten Adele¡¯s ass from her house down the street to perform Skyfall."
Another added, "I love Raye, but NO ONE does it better than Adele! And I wish it was her playing."
A third commented, "I'm not feeling it... maybe it's the theatrics, as the voice is there, hunny."
Another added, "Something about this feels so rushed; idk why they did this whole tribute shit like it was so messy. Wish they let her sing Oscar-winning tears; that would be so much more meaningful than whatever this is (the other performances were chopped too)."
"Wow, they couldn't just get Adele, or is she just busy right now? This was awful," mentioned another.
"Yet she couldn¡¯t quite find breath," quipped another.
However, some also found her vocals powerful, comparing her to Amy Winehouse. "She's totally the next Amy Winehouse, wow," one wrote.
Another added, "Raye is Adele and Amy Winehouse's lovechild."
The James Bond tribute at the Oscars comes after a major shakeup in the film industry, as Amazon MGM took over creative control of the Bond movies in late February, following Amazon's $6.1 billion purchase of MGM Studios in 2022.
