"Let the law take its own course," many say when citizens stand up for their rights. But, in India, the legal process often crawls at a snail's pace, with cases dragging on for years or even decades. Recently, the founder of Careers360 shared a poignant image of an elderly couple leaving the courtroom with a huge weight of countless files and documents accumulated over many years. This heartbreaking scene prompted him to question the lack of empathy within India's judicial system, which he described as "lax and insensitive."
Maheshwer Peri, Founder and Chairman of CAREERS 360, an online platform dedicated to career counseling and educational resources, recently shared a striking image on LinkedIn of an elderly couple struggling with years' worth of files piled onto a wooden trolley.
In his post, he observed,? "They hold each other's hands tight as they fight another battle, another date, another adjournment, year after year," highlighting this heartbreaking scene as a testament to our justice delivery system, which he describes as "lax, insensitive" and lacking "empathy."
Peri emphasised that for students eager to drive social change and positively impact lives while building a successful career, pursuing law is an excellent path. Choosing law means becoming a voice for people like this elderly couple, fighting for justice in a world where injustice often prevails, he said.
In the comments, however, a different perspective emerged, shedding light on the complexities surrounding the legal profession.?
One user pointedly raised several concerns, stating, "What about the lacs of unemployed law graduates?" noting that the return on investment for parents who spend vast sums on their children's legal education is virtually nonexistent. He further added that law firms often exploit interns, replacing them at a moment's notice and refusing to offer reasonable compensation.
Another commenter emphasised that the current situation stems from a judicial system overwhelmed by a staggering number of pleas and cases: "There is scarcity of Judge and courts or sheer lack of accountability on the incumbent to deliver judgement in a time bound manner."
A practicing corporate lawyer chimed in, expressing a sense of shame and sorrow regarding the realities highlighted in the post. "It's heartbreaking," they said, "that our judiciary has failed to resolve even some of the most basic and pressing issues, such as provident fund, gratuity, or pensions, which affect the lives of so many."
This exchange of views highlights the many challenges within the legal system and raises important questions about the future of law as a career and the ability of the judiciary to meet society's pressing needs.
