There has been plenty of debate on whether veganism is healthier than other diets that are promoted by nutritionists. With time, more and more people have started going vegan. For those who still don¡¯t know anything about veganism, it is a diet where one only consumes plant-based foods and skip everything animal-based like dairy and meat.
A doctor on YouTube has taken it upon himself to figure out if being vegan is actually better than a normal, balanced diet as he goes vegan by quitting animal products for 30 days. Doctor Mike Varshavski on YouTube has gathered a large audience for himself with over 10 million subscribers by providing evidence-based medical information to them.
While introducing the video to his viewers, Mike clarified that a vegan diet can be nutritional, but like every other diet you follow, it has to be balanced for it to work on your body. He explained, "If you're following standard American diet and then switch over to a vegan diet, you're gonna see improvement in chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, strokes, even an extension of life in some cases."
In a run-down of his findings, the family medicine doctor shared that the main thing he understood about the diet was that meal planning was essential since he did start to lose his appetite at the beginning of the month. The second thing noticed was that, unlike how some meat-eaters profess that they might lose their energy by just eating plant-based products, the doctor felt he did not experience a drop in his energy level, contrary to his own calculations.
However, he does mention that getting sick and not planning his meals perfectly, in the beginning, did make him lose his energy. He then talks about losing strength. The doctor shared that he stayed "swole" even on a vegan diet. Though the diet did make him lose his motivation to go to the gym since he was putting in so much energy to maintain the diet, when he got to work, he lifted his usual weights.
His fourth observation was that he did lose some weight in the beginning when he wasn¡¯t planning his meals and providing himself with the right nutrients. However, he did not feel weak at any point, even when he dropped from 203 to 200 pounds.
His biggest problem with the diet was that he experienced a lot of gut problems. He explained, "I was having tremendous gas and bloating. It's so embarrassing to say. I mean, think about this: I fly on planes, I interact with patients for long periods of time, and I sit in conferences. I can't just be sitting there, flatulent."?
Needless to say, it does not look like Mike will be shifting to veganism anytime soon, not with his stomach rumbling a big fat no to the regime.
