(Update: The last date for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar was on June 30, 2023. The government has also yet to issue any notification regarding the extension of the deadline. Therefore, according to the Income Tax Department's official guidelines, all PAN cards that were not linked to Aadhaar became inoperative from July 1.)

"In order to provide some more time to the taxpayers, the date for linking PAN & Aadhaar has been extended to 30th June, 2023, whereby persons can intimate their Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for PAN-Aadhaar linking without facing repercussions.?From 1st July, 2023, the unlinked PAN shall become inoperative with consequences. The PAN can be made operative again in 30 days, upon intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of fee of Rs. 1,000." the Income Tax department tweeted recently.
Before 31 March 2022 linking PAN to Aadhaar was free and after that between 1 April 2022 and 30 June 2022 it was Rs 500. However, now you will have to pay a fee of Rs. 1,000 if link your PAN with Aadhaar by 30 June 2023. If you fail to do so your PAN will become inoperative.

Under the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961(the ¡®Act¡¯) every person who has been allotted a PAN as on 1st July, 2017 and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar Number, is required to intimate his Aadhaar to the prescribed authority on or before 31st March, 2023, on payment of a prescribed fee. Failure to do so shall attract certain repercussions under the Act w.e.f. 1st April, 2023. The date for intimating Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for the purpose of linking PAN and Aadhaar has now been extended to 30th June, 2023.
According to reports, more than 51 crore PANs have already been linked with Aadhaar till date.

The first step in linking your PAN card to your Aadhaar card is to visit the official website of the Income Tax Department of India. The website link is e-Filing. Once you are on the website, click on the "Link Aadhaar" option under the "Quick Links" section on the homepage.
1. In this step, you will be required to enter your PAN card and Aadhaar card numbers. After entering the details click on the "View Link Aadhaar Status", and you will see the pop-up that read, Pan not linked with Aadhaar, Please click on the "Link Aadhaar" link to link your Aadhaar with PAN.
2. Click on Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax.
3. After clicking on the previous option on the next screen you need to enter your PAN, Confirm your PAN, and any Mobile number to receive OTP.
4. After successfully verifying through mobile OTP click to continue to make the payment as you can see in the picture below.
5. Click on Proceed on the Income Tax Tile
6. Select Assessment Year (AY) (2023-24) and Type of Payment as "Other Receipts (500)" and Continue.
7. The amount will be pre-filled against Others as you can see below picture then click on Continue.
After successfully completing all these above steps the challan will be generated on the next page select the mode of payment that will redirected you to the Bank website to make the payment.
In case the bank you are using for the payment isn't authorized for payment through "e-Pay Tax" you can make the payment through Protean (NSDL). A step-by-step guide to making the payment through both modes are mentioned below in this article.
You can also link your Aadhaar card to your PAN card through an SMS. To do this, send an SMS to 567678 or 56161 in the following format: UIDPAN
<12 digits Aadhaar>
<10 digit PAN>.
For example, if your Aadhaar number is 123456789012 and your PAN number is ABCDE1234F, you will need to send the following SMS: UIDPAN 123456789012 ABCDE1234F.

7. Applicable amount which is Rs 1000 will be pre-filled against Others and click Continue.

Step 1 - Visit the official website of the Income Tax Department of India and click on Link Aadhaar in the Quick Links section on the homepage or if you have already registered on the website please login to the e-filing portal and Click on Link Aadhar in Profile Section.

2. Click on Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax.
3. Do not fill in any details just click on the hyperlink given below that reads, "Click here to go to protean (previously NSDL) tax payment page for other banks",on the e-Pay tax page to redirect to the Protean (NSDL) Portal.
4. It will take you to Protean (NSDL) official website then click Proceed under Challan No./ITNS 280 (As you can see in the below picture)
5. Select Tax applicable as (0021) Income Tax (Other than companies) and Type of Payment as (500) other receipts.
6. Select the payment mode, Assessment Year as 2023-24, state and fill in the other mandatory details highlighted in the picture below and click on Proceed. And after making the payment you can link your Aadhaar with your PAN on the e-Filing Portal.
Step 2 - Now you can submit the Aadhaar PAN link request on the e-Filing Portal, immediately after the payment is made through the e-Pay Tax service or after 4-5 working days of the making of payment if payment is done on Protean (NSDL) website.
1. Aadhaar card and PAN card link process can be made both in the Post login as well as Pre login mode on the e-Filing portal.
2. If you have already registered on the e-Filing portal just login > On Dashboard, in Profile Section under the Link Aadhaar to PAN option, click Link Aadhaar.
3. You can click on the same link in the personal details section.
4. Enter the Aadhaar card number and click on Validate.

4. After entering the previous details you will get the 6-digit OTP on your registered mobile number that you have to enter in the empty boxes and click on Validate.
5. Your request for linking Aadhaar with Pan has been submitted successfully. To verify please check the Aadhaar-PAN link status.
Step 1: Visit the official Income Tax e-filing portal by using this link: https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
Step 2: On the left side of the page under Quick Link click on ¡®Link Aadhaar Status¡¯.
Step 3: After clicking on the Link Aadhaar Status you will be redirected to the next page where you have to enter your 10-digit PAN card number and 12-digit Aadhaar card number.
Step 4: After clicking on ¡®View Link Aadhaar Status as highlighted in the picture below.
If your PAN card and Aadhaar card are already linked you will get the pop-up that shows "Your PAN AZXXXXXX7L is already linked to given Aadhaar 44XXXXXXXX41" as you can see in the picture below.
If your PAN card and Adhaar card are not linked then it will show "PAN not linked with Aadhaar. Please click on Link Aadhaar link to link your Aadhaar with PAN" as you can see in the picture below. Please take the required actions to link your PAN with Aadhaar before the deadline(31 March 2023).
If you already requested to link PAN and Aadhaar and it pending with UIDAI for validation, please check the status later.
If your Aadhaar card is linked with some other PAN or if your PAN is linked with some other Aadhaar card please contact the jurisdictional AO immediately to delink the both.
