Guinness stopped keeping track of the record for the longest period of time to stay awake after McDonald's accomplishment. They explained that they had stopped monitoring sleep deprivation because of the risks that come along with it naturally. Additionally, they asserted that nobody has ever broken McDonald's dialogue since that time.
The record was formerly held by Randy Gardner and Bruce McAllister, two 17-year-old students, according to a Unilad report. For their science project, they were both able to stay awake for 264 hours (11 days).?
Bruce McAllister admitted in an interview in 2018 that they were foolish in their youth and were unaware of the consequences of going so long without sleep. Additionally, he said that Randy Gardner accepted the challenge; he was only present.
Dr. William Dement, a sleep scientist at Stanford University, observed him. He engaged Gardner in late-night activities like basketball and a trip to the arcade while he watched him. He revealed that Gardner had won every pinball game at the arcade despite getting little sleep.?
But Randy Gardner's actions didn't come without consequences. Dr. Dement noted that Gardner's lack of sleep had an impact on his analytical skills, perception, motivation, memory, and motor control. He also had a very short attention span, hallucinations, and delusions. Randy Gardner developed insomnia in his 60s, but he didn't experience any long-lasting side effects.
He was able to sleep again after nearly ten years of insomnia, but it only got better to six hours each night.Randy Gardner's record was attempted to be broken in 2007, but Tony Wright was only able to sleep for 266 hours. He went on to describe the effects that lack of sleep had on his body and mind.
