But one morning, she discovered that the government aid scheme had unintentionally transferred 14 million Rand ($768363.26 or nearly Rs 6 crore) into her account. Despite the mistake, Sibongile Mani opted to keep the money and spend it lavishly.
She ended up spending the money on luxury clothes, the latest iPhone, and high-end booze bottles. She spent approximately $40,000 (Rs 33.3 lakh) of the funds that were unintentionally deposited.?
She has also started hosting expensive parties and showering her friends with gifts. Sibongile Mani was eventually apprehended after leaving a bank receipt at the supermarket by mistake. She was reported to police, detained, and charged with theft and fraud.?
She was caught in 2017, and in 2022, she was sentenced to five years in prison. However, her lawyer, Asanda Pakade, argued that Sibongile Mani was not a threat to society and did not seek the money that had been wrongly deposited in her account.?
