We often hear about the rigorous entrance exams for IITs and their impressive campus placements, but the day-to-day reality of life in an IIT is lesser known. While YouTube videos paint a picture of comfortable hostels, a recent video on X reveals a different side, showing that the actual living conditions might not be as glamorous as they seem.
Mumbai-based entrepreneur Udit Goenka recently posted a video of an IIT Delhi hostel room, and it's quite shocking.
Check it out here:
The video reveals a twin-seater room in severe disrepair, with large sections of the ceiling crumbled and fallen.?
Udit Goenka notes, "This happened at IIT Delhi yesterday!" and identifies the room as being in the Vindhyachal hostel.
In the comments, many highlight the broader issues with government hostel facilities.?
Akshay Shah, Founder CEO of iWebTechno and GenZDealZ, who collaborates with over 800 campuses, remarks,?"I work with over 800 campuses and barring the new ones all old ones including the best of IIT and IIMs are not maintained the way they should be so this is bound to happen!"
Others pointed out about similar conditions across government institutions: "Infra is hell like in most of the govt institutes, specially in state govt colleges," and "The education system & institutes r in horrible conditions. I always feel disheartened to see all these."
One comment even suggested, "It's a 60 years old hostel, old hostels need to be reconstructed."
The IITs receive significant funding compared to other engineering colleges in India.?
In the 2024 budget, the Indian government allocated INR 10,324.50 crore to IITs, up from INR 9,661.50 crore in 2023.?
With such substantial financial support, students have a right to expect not just world-class education but also well-maintained infrastructure that meets basic standards.
