Inception of World Wildlife Day
During its 68th session on 20 December 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially announced 3 March -- the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) -- as UN World Wildlife Day.
Significance of World Wildlife Day
The World Wildlife Day is observed to celebrate and honour the life creations in the form of wild fauna and flora on the planet. It is also a way to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife and remind the world of their duty to preserve the planet and build a sustainable relationship with the environment.
Theme For World Wildlife Day 2022
The theme for this year's World Wildlife Day day is "Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration". According to the official UN website, the theme aims to draw attention to the conservation status of the critically endangered species as we as to start a conversation towards implementing solutions to conserve them. The theme is in alignment with the sustainable development goals of the organisation.
Endangered Species & Predicted Extinction
According to the official website, currently over 8,400 species of wild fauna and flora are listed in the critically endangered category where as over 30,000 more are close to being endangered or vulnerable. On the basis of this data, over a million species are threatened with extinction.
Ecosystem Restoration & Future Goals
Looking forward, the organisation aims to work towards the conservation of critically endangered species and find solutions to restore their habitats and ecosystems as well as push for sustainable living. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which was launched in 2021, calls for the protection and revival of all ecosystems around the world. The organisation has set 2030 as the deadline for Sustainable Development Goals.
