With the emergence of dating and matrimonial sites, more and more are choosing to go online to find a match. But more often than not the sites are fake, something this 65-year-old man learnt first-hand.

Kharghar police team busted a fake call center in Kolkata and arrested three people, including a woman and a transgender. They cheated the man living in Kharghar of Rs 73.5 lakh after offering him membership of a dating site.?
Senior inspector Pradip Tidar said that Sneha contacted the man in September 2018 and offered him the membership of a dating site named Locanto Dating Services and Speed Dating. She also claimed that they'd 'provide the girls' at the same location that he has provided. They later made him pay the registration fee. But sensing something was up, the victim demanded cancellation of membership, the police said.

¡°But he demanded exorbitant cancellation charges. Thereafter, the accused threatened to lodge a police complaint against him for demanding girls, and they sent him legal notices to scare him and to extort money,¡± Senior inspector Pradip Tidar said.
¡°The accused demanded money to prevent legal trouble and made him transfer Rs 73.5 lakh to several accounts. He coughed up the sum as he feared social stigma. Eventually, he approached Kharghar police and an FIR was registered,¡± Tidar added.
