Parents can be a lot to handle, especially when you are at an age when your wedding becomes the only concern for people around you. A Chinese mom who was concerned about her 38-year-old single son took him to the psychiatrist every Lunar New Year.
Recently, a man from the Chinese province of Henan is rapidly going viral in the country for provoking a debate amongst the Chinese people. With his video, he brought the rising issue of the pressure to marry from parents on the mainland to the fore.
In the video, the man tells the audience that he has never brought a girlfriend home for Lunar New Year which has his mother questioning if he has something amiss in his head. He says his mother believes he ¡°has something wrong in the head.¡±
The ¡°diagnosis¡± came about when his parents started developing a strange dependence on taking him to the psychiatric check-up every Lunar New Year. On February 4, the man surnamed Wang was taken to the Henan Provincial Psychiatric Hospital.
After multiple visits, the doctor finally told the mom that nothing was wrong with her son and he was not ill but it was she who had to be checked up because she was coming up with a mental disorder of ¡°forcing her son to marry.¡±
In a conversation with Beijing News, Wand revealed that he formerly worked as an actor and is now a Tennis coach while he has been living in Beijing for over a decade.?Wang explained why he followed along with her mother¡¯s weird obsession, ¡°I should not be identified as an unmarried person. I am just very busy and haven¡¯t met the right person. My mum can¡¯t sleep because I don¡¯t get married, so I feel quite upset.¡±
He also revealed that in his hometown, he is famously known as the ¡°super old single man.¡± Wang¡¯s struggle touched many hearts as the people in China united while they talked about the pressure they face from their own families to get married and settled as soon as possible.
The pressure to marry reaches a peak usually when the Lunar New Year arrives and the youngsters go back to their hometowns to visit their families and the conversations all turn into lectures about how the individual should marry and get settled soon.
While the older generation in China believes one should marry soon and have children, the youth in the country are more cautious and sceptical of marriage. Definitely not too different from situations back home in India.?
