The lockdown might sure kept drink driving accidents at bay... or so you thought.
On May 4, a car rammed into the peripheral wall of Qutub Minar during the early hours of the morning and damaged about 50 metres of the wall.
The driver has reportedly been identified as Arun Chauhan; he is said to have been under the influence of alcohol when he drove his car into said?wall. Reports add that he was pulled out of the wreckage by Archaelogical Survey of India guards who were on duty. Within minutes the car burst out in flames and was engulfed in them.
The driver, sustained minor injuries, and was taken away by the police and the fire brigade was called in to douse the fire.
ASI filed a complaint with police demanding that the man ¡®pay a penalty equal to the cost of damages to the heritage site¡¯, which is also a government property.
Speaking to TOI, superintending archaeologist (Delhi circle), Gunjan Srivastava, said, ¡°After the incident, we have deployed a team to Qutub Minar to assess the damage to the heritage site. About 50 metres of the wall has been damaged. ASI has requested the Police to remove the wreckage from outside the heritage site immediately.¡±
If Chauhan had not been helped by guards in time, he might not have survived the crash and subsequent car blast.?
