There's nothing wrong with students being punished for doing something wrong or missing their homework, but the punishment has to be within reasonable limits. In what sounds like an overly harsh disciplinary measure, a teacher made an 8-year-old girl do 450 sit-ups, just because she skipped her homework.?
According to reports, the girl, studying in Class 3 at a school in Thane district, was rushed to the hospital for treatment after the cruel punishment.?
The teacher, identified as Lata, last month allegedly stripped the girl and beat her with a cane for not doing her homework, Naya Nagar police station sub-inspector, Sohel Pathan, said, quoting the complaint filed by the child's mother. She also alleged that post the beating, her daughter's legs had swollen up.?When the girl returned home from the tuition classes, her mother saw the child was unable to walk and found swelling in both her legs.
While being questioned for her merciless action, the teacher looked absolutely indifferent and didn't think that the punishment was wrong. Based on the complaint, the teacher has been booked under Indian Penal Code Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and provisions of the Juvenile.?
Corporal punishment is a very common practice in schools across India. This form of abuse ranges from mild to severe forms of physical punishment and, sometimes, even verbal abuse.??
Being subjected to this sort of harassment can be extremely scarring for students that young. Its memory will stay with them for life and it may even have a direct effect on a growing child's personality. But many teachers just don't seem to care about the consequences. Surely, we can find better, more effective and most importantly, more humane measures to discipline kids, right?
