Sometimes, even rocks can have the same value as gold. Proving the phrase right is an Australian man who found an old rock while searching for gold. In 2015, Dave Hole was on a search for gold around Melbourne. He thought his life had changed after he discovered a rather heavy rock.
Hole expected the heavy rock to have valuable gold inside, given its massive weight. He tried to open the rock to unlock his fortunes, but he couldn¡¯t. No matter what he tried, Hole could not crack open the rock. He tried using a rock saw, an angle grinder, a drill, and even dousing the rock in acid, but to his disappointment, the rock stayed shut. Although he did leave some permanent marks on the mysterious rock, its insides were still under a veil.
The reason why Hole could not open the rock even with a sledgehammer was because it was no ordinary rock, it was a centuries-old meteoroid. It was a rare meteorite, now called the Maryborough meteorite. The rock is said to contain precious raindrops dating back to the formation of our solar system, infinitely more valuable than the gold Hole was searching for.
In a conversation with The Sydney Morning Herald, Melbourne Museum Geologist Dermot Henry talked about the rare meteorite, ¡°It had this sculpted, dimpled look to it. That's formed when they come through the atmosphere, they are melting on the outside, and the atmosphere sculpts them." The meteor was kept on display at the Melbourne Museum after it was discovered by Hole.?
After the testing on the rock from space was finished, some major questions were answered. The rock was revealed to be a 4.6-billion-year-old meteorite and was then named "Maryborough." It was also revealed through research that the reason for its immense weight is the dense form of nickel and iron inside it. Unlike rocks on earth, the meteorite had dense metals inside it.
After the hole could not open the hard surface of the meteorite, the geologist had to cut open the priceless rock with a diamond saw. The cross-section of the space rock revealed a beautiful display of little silver raindrops. Showing the cross-section, Henry said, ¡°You're looking right back to the formation of the solar system here.¡±
