A passenger once requested a selfie with the man who hijacked the plane he was on.Since the event, the Brit has come out, revealing why he chose to take a picture with the hijacker.?
In 2016, an Egyptair flight from HBE Airport in Alexandria, Egypt, to Cairo Airport, Egypt, was hijacked by a man apparently wearing a suicide belt. The short-haul flight carried only 556 passengers, along with staff members and one member of the airline's security team.
The hijacker demanded that the flight be redirected to Cyprus and threatened to blow up the jet if the pilot didn't comply.Fortunately, the airplane landed safely at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus, with all passengers except four and the whole flight crew released.?
Among the four passengers held captive by the hijacker, eventually identified as Seif Eldin Mustafa, was a Brit named Ben Innes, who bizarrely took a photo with him. Why, though?26-year-old Innes, an oil sector health and safety auditor based in Aberdeen, was on board the plane for five hours after it arrived in Larnaca, along with three other passengers and flight crew.
Mustafa apparently diverted the plane to visit his ex-wife, who lived in Cyprus.During that time, while officials were negotiating with the accused hijacker, Innes decided to take a photograph with Mustafa, which went viral.?
His motive? He wanted 'a opportunity to get a closer look' at the purported bomb device. In an interview with The Sun (via CBS), Innes stated that he's not entirely sure why he did it.The Brit went on: "After about half an hour in Larnaca, I requested for a photo with him while we were hanging around waiting. I thought, "Why not?"?
"I just threw caution to the wind, trying to stay positive in the face of adversity. I believed I had nothing to lose if his bomb was real, so I took the opportunity to have a closer look."
Innes explained that he had one of the cabin crew interpret for him and asked the hijacker if he could snap a selfie."He just shrugged OK, so I stood by him and smiled for the camera while a stewardess did the snap," Innes told me. "It has to be the best selfie ever."?
