As the Lok Sabha election campaign gathers momentum across the country, another movement is gaining strength among the residents of Noida and adjoining areas in the Gautam Buddha Nagar Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
Thousand of Noida residents have launched what they call a 'No Registry No Vote' campaign and have vowed not to cast their votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Posters with a message reading 'No Registry, No Vote' have come up outside several residential societies in the city.
Protests have intensified in residential complexes like Gardenia Glory in Sector 46, Noida, Futec Gateway in Sector 75, and Himalayan Pride, Nirala Greens, and Nirala Global in Greater Noida West.
The campaign is aimed at pressing the authorities to expedite the registration of their properties, including flats, which they say have been pending for many years.
The registration of thousands of flats that have already been sold to their customers has been stalled for years because of non-payment of dues by the builders to the authorities.
This has left thousands of homebuyers who spent their life savings with no documents to show the possession of their homes.
Several residents claimed the registry of their apartments was pending even after 2 years of paying the entire amount. They said they don¡¯t have the ownership rights of their homes even after paying the money for the property.
Earlier this year, the Uttar Pradesh government had waived off penalties and slashed the interest applied on dues by real estate developers, paving the way for registration of their flats.
Some 35 developers from the city have signed up for the government's rehabilitation package for stalled projects.
Following this many builders have deposited 25 per cent of the amount with the authorities, after which over 1000 flats have been registered in recent weeks, but the residents say it is not enough and are demanding possession documents for all of them.
