The sea of rubbish is seen extending to the national park, which is a forest with high biodiversity.
The Sarapui river flows for 36 kilometres (22 miles) through Rio de Janeiro state. It often overflows, due to soil impermeability and reduction of space for the water to flow, causing floods.
It is acknowledged by the authorities to be highly polluted and part of a general problem. Millions of Brazilians do not have access to basic sanitation, particularly in the region through which the Sarapui River flows.
According to reports, Rio Sarapu¨Ē provides roughly 10 percent of the fresh water that feeds RioĄ¯s Guanabara Bay, often carrying the sewage and garbage from upstream.

The government had promised to clean up Guanabara Bay before the Rio Olympics since it was chosen as the venue for the Olympic Games sailing competitions. However, as?Guardian?had reported at the time, the government had not taken any concrete steps in that direction.
