After finishing their courses, a majority of freshmen start looking for internships. Although employers may have specific requirements, it would be strange if they rejected an applicant solely because they didn't own a specific device. The latter actually happened with a student who then shared their experience on Grapevine, a website where users can post reviews of businesses.?
The student whose identity was not revealed shared that they were turned down because they didn't own a MacBook. Here's what happened.?
A screenshot of the same was posted on Grapevine's official Twitter account. In response to the question, "Most absurd reasons for being rejected?" the person described his experience.
A screenshot of the person's experience was posted in the tweet, in which the student wrote, ¡°Applied for an intern position in an early-stage startup. Had a screening call with their HR. After the usual discussion, she told me that they won¡¯t be able to provide work laptops before getting converted to a full-time position. Asked me whether I had my own laptop and WIFI. After telling her I had a windows laptop, she told me that they were only looking for folks with Macbooks and cut the call."?
A man shared a similar experience and wrote, "I was seeking internship during MBA, and got a call for a sales role from a renowned Real Estate consulting firm. They expected me to have my own car, so that I can take clients for site-visit, and weren't paying for fuel/wear & tear; and almost laughed when asked about stipend!"
Another user wrote, "Basically you are poor so will want stipend!... Mac users are moneyed."
A man also wrote, "Made it through to the partner round of a VC firm, I pointed out that they did a lot of deep-tech investments & my experience was marketplaces & SaaS. The partner said "We want people with diverse experience.?Rejection email said my lack of deep-tech experience was the problem."
