Strawberries are a lovely treat, but a recent video has raised concerns about their cleanliness. The video, which has gone popular on social media, depicts a strawberry under a microscope and swarming with small critters.?
The insects visible crawling inside the strawberry could be fruit flies, including the spotted wing drosophila. Unlike typical fruit flies, which prefer overripe or damaged fruit, spotted wing drosophila can lay eggs in healthy berries.?
These eggs grow into very minute larvae that would be undetectable in a standard store-bought strawberry.
"These larvae are so microscopic that even if you ate a quart of strawberries, you're still consuming a minuscule amount of extra protein," said Jennie Schmidt, a registered dietitian and farmer in Sudlersville, Maryland, according to the health content website Everyday Health.
"As disgusting as it may be to some, if you pluck a carrot out of the ground and eat it, it will include microscopic insects. A healthy soil is rich in bacteria and fungi. It's not bad for you," Schmidt was reported as adding.
According to a user, "It's well known that strawberries have bugs, soak them in water with either vinegar or baking soda or salt for 20+ minutes." A second person wrote, "Better than micro plastics, plus probably good for the gut biome, likely organic too with all the critters crawling."?
A third wrote, "If I was worried about microorganisms on my food, I'd starve to death." Check the viral video here.?
