Amid water-crisis and near-record high temperatures in Karnataka, beer sales are soaring to unprecedented levels. Bengaluru, the state capital and renowned as the Silicon Valley of India, stands out as the epicenter of beer consumption across the entire southern region.
As per a report by TOI, a senior official from the excise department linked the surge in sales to the rising temperatures in Karnataka. Over the past 15 days alone, an astounding 23.5 lakh carton boxes of beer were reportedly sold across the state.
This surge in beer sales coincides with the recent forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting an extended duration of heat waves across various regions of central, northern plains, and southern India for the upcoming summer months.

Information obtained from the excise department reveals that Karnataka has already reached 61% of the total sales reported for the entire month of April 2023, according to the TOI report.
However, upon closer analysis of the data, it becomes apparent that beer sales have been skyrocketing since the beginning of 2024, as noted in the report.
In both February and March, beer sales surged past the previous year's records, marking a notable trend observed throughout 2024. This summer, the excise department reported a remarkable 30% increase in sales compared to previous years, indicating a significant spike in demand.
Assuring consumers, the excise department confirmed that it possesses sufficient stock to meet the growing demand for beer.
Another official highlighted in the report emphasized that during the summer season, beer becomes the beverage of choice for many individuals, both in urban and rural areas. As temperatures soar, so does the consumption of beer.
Chilled beer is reportedly preferred by consumers, with many believing it aids in combating the oppressive heat.
