"Learning about the seed plot technique changed everything for me. It wasn’t just a new method; it was a completely new way of thinking about farming," Ramkaran shares. Armed with knowledge from CPRI and support from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ramkaran went a step further by setting up a tissue culture lab on his farm to produce high-quality potato seeds. This bold move significantly boosted his harvest and earnings.

The Rise of Shivam Seeds Farm

Ramkaran Tiwari now operates Shivam Seeds Farm, named after his son Shivam, who also helps manage the farm. Spread over 30 acres, the farm produces a staggering 3,500 to 4,000 quintals of potatoes annually, earning him approximately Rs 1 crore in profits. Ramkaran's focus on producing over ten varieties of high-quality potatoes, such as Kufri Lima, Kufri Sangam, and Kufri Bahar, has helped his farm stand out in the competitive market.

"We grow more than ten varieties of potatoes, ensuring our customers always get the best quality," says Ramkaran. In addition to producing excellent crops, he has embraced modern marketing techniques, using social media to connect directly with customers, which has dramatically increased his sales.

"Customers now come directly to the farm to buy potatoes, trusting the quality we provide. This way, even when market prices fluctuate, we maintain consistent business," he explains to Krishi Jagran.

Making an Impact: From Local to National Success

Ramkaran’s success hasn’t just benefited him but has also had a significant impact on his community. Thanks to his high-quality potatoes and innovative farming practices, Etawah has shifted from importing potatoes from other states to now exporting potatoes to regions like Punjab and Haryana. Ramkaran’s achievements have also inspired other farmers in the area to adopt better farming methods, resulting in overall growth for the region.

"We used to import potatoes, but now we are exporting them. It’s a proud moment for all of us, and I hope to expand our reach internationally soon," says Ramkaran.

"I always tell fellow farmers that creating a brand and focusing on quality seeds and training can make farming highly profitable," Ramkaran advises.

Every year, Ramkaran invests Rs 20-25 lakh into Shivam Seeds Farm. While the financial returns are impressive, with profits nearing Rs 1 crore, for Ramkaran, the true satisfaction comes from building something sustainable and impactful.
