When PepsiCo appointed its first ever female CEO Indra Nooyi in 2006, she reached out to Steve Jobs to gain insight on how he ran and transformed Apple. She then went on to share what lessons her interaction with Steve Jobs taught her. Nooyi, who was PepsiCo¡¯s CEO from 2006-2018, shared the following three lessons she learnt from Steve Jobs, who graciously spent about three hours when Nooyi met her:

Indra Nooyi said that Jobs asked her first question about how she planned to leave her mark at PepsiCo. Nooyi placed a high value on design because she recognized how important it was to making a connection with her customers. She wanted to alter the way goods were arranged on store shelves as well as how they were packaged.?
She shared this goal with Steve Jobs, who responded, ¡°if design is important to you, it has to report to you because it¡¯s a new skill that you have to build in the company.¡±?¡°If you don¡¯t show CEO support for that function, don¡¯t even get started on that journey,¡± Jobs told her.
Nooyi took his advice to heart right away. In her early years as CEO, she photographed PepsiCo products, sent feedback to her design and marketing teams, and made weekly trips to the grocery store.?
Steve Jobs was clear with Nooyi: ¡°Don¡¯t be too nice.¡±?He told her: ¡°When you really don¡¯t get what you want and you really believe that¡¯s the right thing for the company, it¡¯s okay to throw a temper tantrum [and] throw things around.¡±
For Steve Jobs, such stunts were a way of getting attention for things he cared about. Nooyi recalled him telling her, ¡°People will talk about it and they¡¯ll know it¡¯s important for you.¡±
