Its been two years since British publisher HarperCollins announced that it had acquired rights to publish the authorized biography of Tata group¡¯s chairman emeritus Ratan Tata. The publishing house had won the keenly contested bidding war for worldwide rights of the biography, in a deal of over Rs 2-crore.
While the much awaited biography was expected to be published in November 2022, the wait is getting longer due to a delay. While we wait for Ratan Tata¡¯s biography to be released anytime soon, let us bring to you the story of Thomas Mathew, the man who is writing Ratan Tata¡¯s biography titled?'Ratan Tata: A Life'.
Ratan Tata¡¯s biography book is being authored by a former senior bureaucrat and retired IAS officer, Thomas Mathew, who got access to the photographs, private papers and correspondence of Ratan Tata during the last few years. Mathew has earlier authored two other books - Abode Under the Dome and The Winged Wonders of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Dr Thomas Mathew is a retired bureaucrat belonging to the 1983 batch of the Indian Administrative Service. He holds a PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University and is a Bachelor of Law from Delhi University. He has worked in key roles in the ministries of Finance, Defence and Industry, and was Additional Secretary to India's then President Pranab Mukherjee.
Dr Mathew's comprehensive account of Ratan Tata's life includes unknown details and fascinating stories from his formative years, the time he spent in America as a student, his return to India and his early tenure with the Tata Group. It leads up to the inspiring and engaging documentation of Mr Tata's business strategies, leadership vision and personal integrity that have shaped the Group, a statement by publishing house HarperCollins had mentioned.
Expressing his thoughts on writing Ratan Tata's biography titled?'Ratan Tata: A Life',?the author of the book, Dr. Thomas Mathew, had said: ¡®Over the last four decades, I have had the opportunity to closely observe and interact with the Indian corporate ecosystem and in the later years with Mr Ratan Tata and the Tata Group, in particular. So, when I got the opportunity to write the story of the man whose name instantly evokes intense admiration, bordering on adulation, among people across the world, I had no doubt that it would be far and away an exciting yet daunting task.
