As soon as Elon Musk took over Twitter last week, he was quick to fire many of Twitter¡¯s top executives, including?CEO Parag Agrawal. And the layoff announcements have continued for the Musk-owned company. Beginning today, Twitter has started telling employees by email about whether they have been laid off.
The social media company had said in an email to staff that it would alert employees on Friday about staff layoffs.
"In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday," said the email sent yesterday, as per Reuters.
Elon Musk is looking to cut around 3,700 Twitter staff, or about half the workforce, as he seeks to slash costs and impose a demanding new work ethic.
Reuters report mentioned that Twitter said in the email that its offices would be temporarily closed and all badge access suspended in order "to help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data."
But the misery doesn't seem to be limited to layoffs at Twitter.
Managers at Twitter have instructed some employees to work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week, in order to hit new owner Elon Musk¡¯s aggressive deadlines, according to internal communications.?The orders have come without any discussion about overtime pay or comp time, or about job security.?
In such an atmosphere of fear and distrust, many Twitter employees have stopped communicating with each other on internal systems about workplace issues.? Some of Twitter¡¯s Slack channels have gone nearly silent too, multiple employees reportedly told CNBC.
And if things didn't seem worse enough, Elon Musk has also removed ¡°days of rest¡± from Twitter staff calendars, as per Bloomberg report. The monthly, company-wide day off was introduced during the pandemic period. Its expiration is another sign of Elon Musk¡¯s impatience with Twitter¡¯s existing work culture.??
