From McDonald's To Rolls-Royce: Companies That Stand To Lose The Most From Russia's War On Ukraine

Amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the economies of the two involved countries alongside many other nations across the globe have been impacted in more ways than one. And international companies that hold a major presence in Russia are no exception.?

With the list of sanctions against Russia increasing day by day, such companies stand to lose the most.

Here’s a list of companies that have a significant presence in Russia, as per a report by CNN and Reuters.

1. Rolls-Royce

Although Rolls-Royce, the aero-engine maker, says Russia contributes less than 2% of its total revenue, a significant 20% of Rolls-Royce's titanium is from Russia, which is used to make engine parts and landing gear for long-haul jetliners.?

2. McDonald's

The global burger chain McDonald’s has categorized Russia as a high-growth market and continued to open locations there throughout the last ten years, thus making it a key business area for the company.

3. Nestle

Nestle, the Swiss consumer goods company, had six factories in Russia as of 2020, including plants making confectionery and drinks, according to its website. Its 2020 sales from Russia reportedly were worth about $1.7 billion.

4. Coca-Cola HBC (Hellenic Bottling Company)

Coca Cola counts Russia among its largest markets and reportedly employs 7,000 people there. The London-listed company bottles Coke for Russia, Ukraine and a significant part of Central, Eastern Europe.?

5. Japan Tobacco

This company employs close to 4,000 people at its Russian plants, and its tax payments in 2020 accounted for 1.4% of the Russian Federation state budget, as per Japan Tobacco's website. The former tobacco monopoly relies on the Commonwealth of Independent States, including Russia and Belarus, for about one-fifth of its profits.

6. Mitsubishi

This company distributes Mitsubishi Motor vehicles through around 141 dealerships in Russia and has a stake in Sakhalin II gas and oil development project that supplies Japan with liquefied natural gas and trades coal, aluminium, nickel, coal, methanol, plastics and other materials. Also, it supplies power plant equipment and other machinery to Russia.

7. Toyota

Apart from the company's plant that is present in Saint Petersburg, Russia, which makes Camry and Rav4 vehicles, Toyota has a sales office in Moscow, with about 2,600 staff, including 26 Japanese nationals.

Besides these companies, other international companies that have a deep footprint in Russia, are French carmaker Renault, German chemicals maker BASF, British oil company BP, French yoghurt maker Danone, French gas utility company Engie, German retailer Metro, French jet engine maker Safran, Dutch oil company Shell, French oil company Total Energies, German energy company Uniper, American oil giant ExxonMobil, Oreo maker and Cadbury owner Mondelez and Japanese trading house Marubeni.?

Also, the only Indian bank in Russia, Commercial Indo Bank Llc, can also be affected. It is a joint venture between SBI and Canara Bank.
