2022 Model Of Iconic Ford Mustang Muscle Car May Be A V8 Hybrid!
The next generation Mustang will be the second of its kind for the Mustang moniker. Ford released the all electric Mach E variant of the car back in November last year. The new hybrid model will now come as a part of Fords plans to launch 18 mild-hybrid and full-Hybrid models by 2022.
Mustang, the iconic muscle car from the house of Ford, will see its next iteration being introduced in 2022. Recent reports hint that the variant might just carry a hybrid powertrain.
The electric vehicle, if it comes, will be the second of its kind for the Mustang moniker. Ford released the all electric Mach E variant of the car back in November last year. The new hybrid model will now come as a part of Ford¡¯s plans to launch 18 mild-hybrid and full-hybrid models by 2022.
Autocar reports that the first hybrid powertrain will be seen on the Mustang as it comes into production in 2022. Codenamed S650, the next generation Mustang was supposed to be the US auto maker¡¯s first attempt at electrification of its iconic car. It Instead, took another route with a change in leadership to bring in a Mustang-inspired EV - the Mach-E.
Now that the deliveries for the Mach-E are set to begin with fall this year, the company now has to plan for the next models. Considering these (and not the Mach-E) would form the majority of the sales, the company wants to use its renowned V8 engine, preferably in combination with a hybrid system for better fuel efficiency.
The system has even been spotted before. A 2017 patent filed by Ford, a technical drawing of a ¡°twin-motor drive system for hybrid vehicle¡± shows an eight-cylinder V-engine along with two electric motors being used to propel a vehicle.
Since the electric motors are mounted on either sides of the engine, the drawings indicate a four wheel drive vehicle to be produced by the use of these engines. A similar powertrain is used in the Ford Explorer Hybrid, recently launched in the US.
While it is probable that the company will go hybrid with the new Mustang, it is yet unclear whether a cheaper, non-hybrid model will follow or not. If not, it might mark the end of the IC engine Mustang as we know it.
