After months of build up, Lucid Motors has finally come up with its first ever electric vehicle named Lucid Air. Though much was already known about the luxury electric sedan, the company has now announced the price of its several variants for the first time, starting at just around $80,000 for the base option.
Lucid had already claimed several firsts for the Air. Post launch, much of these can now be seen on the top variant of the EV. Called Lucid Air Dream Edition, the company promises the car to produce a total of 1,080 hp, thanks to the dual motors driving all four wheels of the electric car. The result is a speed of up to 100 kmph in 2.5 seconds and a quarter mile run in a mere 9.9 seconds.
The Lucid Air Dream Edition is also the first one that will see the light of deliveries in the second quarter next year. Three other variants of the electric sedan are named ¡®Air Grand Touring¡¯, ¡®Air Touring¡¯ and simply ¡®Air¡¯, in the order of their prices. Much is yet to be announced about the base variant of Lucid Air priced under $80,000, the deliveries of which will begin sometime in 2022.
The rest of the variants, however, do showcase a complete story of the vehicle as follows.
Lucid Air Exterior
In terms of design, the company has followed the trail set since the first unveil of the Air back in 2017. The car is almost entirely similar to the first design, sporting an elongated frame for a luxury feel with contours along the length and continuous LED highlights on the front and the back.
Just like its continuous LED headlights, a seamless LED bar at the back spells ¡®Lucid¡¯ at the centre. The feel of the Air being a luxury sedan is prevalent from one look at the design, even more so from the inside.
Lucid Air Interior
Lucid has ensured a plush interior on the car, especially on the Air Dream Edition. The spacious insides of the EV come with an exclusive interior palette and name: Santa Monica. This includes a Nappa full-grain leather in Graphite Gray and Ceramic highlighted with Alcantara inserts, Silvered Eucalyptus wood as well as bright Platinum metal trim.
A glass canopy roof adds to the multiple window panes letting ample light inside, further giving a spacious feel to the occupants. At the front, the cockpit offers a large curved instrument cluster along with a retractable screen in the center console. This is further equipped with Lucid's own DreamDrive driver assistance system and a 21-speaker Immersive Audio System.
Lucid Air Performance
The 1080 hp power output mentioned above is the highest performance specs among the four variants of the Lucid Air. The Lucid Air Dream Edition, however, does not offer the longest range, a title bagged by the Lucid Air Grand Touring for an estimated 517 miles (832 km) run on a single charge.
For all the models, Lucid claims that 20 minutes of charging time would be sufficient for a 300 mile (482 km) run, giving rise to claims that Lucid Air is the fastest charging EV ever. This will be through the biggest available battery pack having a capacity of 113 kWh.
In addition, Lucid Air is also equipped with a 19.2 kW bidirectional onboard charger that supports vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-vehicle charging.
It will be interesting to see the response to Lucid¡¯s pricing of the luxury EV. The company has repeatedly claimed it to be much better than anything available in the market but with a price tag that competes with the likes of Porsche Taycan, it is yet to be seen whether the EV enthusiasts accept it. Once the base variant with a price tag of under $80,000 is out, that is when the Air might gain a wider acceptance in the market.
Project Gravity
At the launch event, Lucid also showcased its next electric vehicle, an all electric SUV currently being produced under the name 'Project Gravity.' The SUV was previously spotted on the roads for a shoot along with Lucid Air. Based on the same architecture as the Air, the electric SUV will make its way to the market in 'the next couple years' as per Lucid Motors.
