Lucid Air Electric Sedan Beats Tesla Model S With Range Of 830 Km On A Single Charge
Lucid Air will be the longest range electric vehicle to date upon its reveal on September 9. A 500 mile plus range is something that not even established EV players including Tesla could achieve to date Tesla Model S Long Range recently caused an exchange between Elon Musk and the EPA as to whether its range was more than 400 miles or less.
As the date of the launch of Lucid Air electric sedan nears, the electric car is setting new benchmarks in the EV industry. Last month, Lucid Motors had claimed the Air to be the most aerodynamic car in the world. Now, it seems like it will go the longest distance too, beating the acclaimed Tesla Model S Long Range variant in the process.
This is not the first time that the company has hinted at the luxury EV¡¯s massive range. A 400 miles (644 km) plus range was confirmed since the development days of the Air. Now, Lucid Motors has got an ¡°independent range verification¡± on the Air by a company called FEV North America, that closely follows the EPA standards of range testing.
As per the result of the test, Lucid Air is capable of covering up to 517 miles (832 km) on a single charge. With this number, the Lucid Air will be ¡°the longest range electric vehicle to date¡± upon its reveal on September 9.
Beating Tesla
A 500 mile plus range is something that not even established EV players, including Tesla, could achieve to date. Tesla Model S Long Range recently caused an exchange between Elon Musk and the EPA as to whether its range was more than 400 miles or less. It was finally confirmed to be 402 miles on a single charge.
That is still a 100 miles (160 km) short of what Lucid Air is claiming. Other EVs in the range mostly offer around 250 to 300 miles of range so it is easy to see how the Air will beat the competition in this regard hands down.
Lucid Motors CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson, who has worked on the Tesla Model S in the initial phase, does not consider Tesla a direct competition for the Air. That is because the electric sedan is more of a luxury offering than the Model S and a considerable price difference is expected to follow this distinction. But as for the range, the Model S was certainly supposed to be a benchmark to be beaten, that Air has managed to do successfully.
This does not mean Tesla will not be back in the race. With Musk claiming 500 mile range to be a norm going forward and Tesla¡¯s battery day just around the corner, the company is anticipated to reveal some major battery advancements that will propel Tesla electric cars at least equivalent to what the Air claims.
