Renault 5 EV Doesn't Move Much Away From The Concept, Here Are More Details

Renault is resurrecting the 5 supermini as an EV for 2024, but only the concept of the car and a Clio-based test mule have been revealed until now.

The basic design remains the same, including the powerful fender flares that Renault could have easily reserved for its Alpine offshoot, the A290. Even the odd six-spoke alloy wheels, though painted black in this case, appear to be the same type as those worn by the yellow concept shown in 2021.

Building compact EVs that are both reasonable and profitable is difficult, so we're not shocked that the show car's camera-based door mirrors have been replaced with normal glass ears.

As per reports, financial constraints caused Renault to abandon the concept's flush front-door handles in favour of more typical mechanical pulls. The rear handle, like the Clio's, is recessed in the base of the C-pillar, giving the impression that the 5 is a two-door car rather than the four-door design that it is.

Because vertical lights were a key part of the design of the two original generations of Renault 5 and were also featured on the concept, they'll almost certainly make an appearance for 2024, along with a connecting light bar.

The new car is built on the CMF-B EV platform

The new 5 is built on the CMF-B EV platform, which is also used in the Renault 4 crossover and the Nissan Micra EV.

It is based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance's CMF-B combustion supermini platform, which is found in vehicles such as the Clio and Captur, rather than being designed from the ground up for EVs, but it does have one benefit over those vehicles in that it features a multi-link rear end rather than a basic torsion beam axle.

The 5 will be powered by a single 134 hp (136 PS) electric motor driving the front wheels, and it should have a range of up to 249 miles (400 km) from a 52 kWh battery pack, although the cheapest model will only get 40 kWh.

It will be available in European dealerships beginning next year, with prices starting at less than €25,000 ($27k), and will shortly compete with VW's ID.2.
