India at Oscars 2025: 2-time Academy winner Guneet Monga's Anuja emerges as country¡¯s last hope
Kiran Rao¡¯s Laapataa Ladies have been snubbed from the Oscars 2025 race and the internet is both upset and baffled. But to all sad hearts, cheer up, India still has hope with the Guneet Monga-backed film Anuja.
India still remains in the Oscars 2025 race! Despite the snub of Laapataa Ladies from the International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards, the country continues to hold its last hope at the esteemed award show. Coming to our rescue is 2-time Academy winner Guneet Monga with her film Anuja which has been shortlisted under the Best Live-Action Short Film category.
Can India still win an Oscar this year?
Fingers crossed! All of our hearts broke a little after Kiran Rao¡¯s directorial failed to make a cut in the Oscars shortlists announced on December 17, 2024. However, not just Indian-origin Santosh, India is on the front foot with Anuja, a film backed by Guneet Monga. Starring Nagesh Bhonsle in an ensemble of fine actors, Anuja talks about the rising issue of child labour in the garment industry.
The love story of Guneet Monga and the Oscars
A trailblazer in Indian cinema, Guneet has scripted history by winning two Oscars so far for her impactful storytelling. In 2019, she co-produced Period: End of Sentence, a documentary that highlights menstrual health awareness and the stigma around periods in rural India. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject).
In 2023, Guneet¡¯s production The Elephant Whisperers won the same category at the Oscars. The heartwarming documentary explores the bond between humans and elephants, capturing the story of a tribal couple who care for an orphaned elephant in South India. This win cemented Guneet¡¯s position as a powerhouse producer who brings authentic, meaningful stories to life.
India hopes Monga and her vision of powerful storytelling bring home another Oscars in 2025.
