Disney+Hotstar¡¯s Masoom is set in a small town of Punjab which is all about a journey of unravelling various stations of lies.
Each lie opens a new door of questions and creates a new path for suspense. At the core, the show is all about relationships and secrets that exist in a family.
¡®Dysfunctional¡¯ is the word we often use for families who appear to have a strange separation but this isn¡¯t the case for the Kapoor family.
They aren¡¯t specifically dysfunctional, their relationship lies in a grey area too hard to define. The slow-burn thriller has a compelling plot and certainly marks a good start for Boman Irani¡¯s OTT career.
The show reminds me of another popular family crime drama called The Raikar Case which unravels the past and secrets of a family when the youngest son of the family commits suicide. The Raikar Case is brilliantly crafted whereas Masoom still stands on a lower deck if compared to that. The mystery around the Kapoor family unravels slowly and keeps the viewers hooked with unpredictable twists and turns but the show doesn¡¯t go to the full-on mystery mode in an intensified manner.
However, it¡¯s still a refreshing break from all the chaotic stories of Uttar Pradesh which we have become kind of accustomed to seeing whenever a thriller show releases, something of a different location finally.
The show begins after the passing of her mother Gunwant, Sana (Samara Tijori) returns to her home in a small Punjab town in the first episode. Sana and her father, Dr. Kapoor(Boman Irani), have a contentious relationship. Sana becomes certain that her mother's death was not an accident.
Sana's claims have put her family on edge, so her attempts to show that her father killed her mother push them over the line into mayhem. Sana's search brings her to memories of her early life, forcing the entire family to face the secrets they have long kept hidden from one another.
Apart from the thriller element, what makes the show even more compelling is the performance of the cast. The cast isn¡¯t a roundup of usual suspects and many actors have been in the entertainment game for a long but they are very new to the OTT space, I wish to see more of them now. Actors like Upasana Singh, Manu Rishi Chadha, and Boman Irani have been in the entertainment industry for so long but due to some reason or the other they haven¡¯t made their existence in the OTT space and I am so glad they finally did with this compelling show.
Coming to the performances, Boman Irani is under the spotlight, and the makers have done a really good job in skinning his character. However, it has absence of layers but it still has a lot to feel connected with and stay hooked with him till the end of the show. The different shades of anger, helplessness, menace, and love are brilliantly carried out by him.
Samara Tijori as the protagonist did a brilliant job in carrying the narrative on her shoulders. Manjari Fadnnis also played a very important role in the show. Manjari brought a sense of vulnerability with her character. It¡¯s frustrating to see how loyal she was to her father even after seeing so many red flags.
Overall, Masoom knew how to play with the devices of twists and turns and give a compelling start to Boman Irani¡¯s career in the OTT space. Mostly family dramas with the element of the thriller are quite interesting but either they turn out to be a huge hit or a disaster Masoom landed somewhere in the middle which is quite amazing in its own way.
Boman Irani empowered the show in unimaginable ways. Irani's powerful portrayal of a guy who is terribly disappointed by his inability to relieve his wife's suffering. His enormous obligations exacerbate his internal conflict. As it always has been, the actor's performance arc is outstanding here. Irani has portrayed his on-screen presence with seamless ease and is equally adept at comedy and roles with shades of grey (like Jolly LLB and 3 Idiots, among others)
