House Of The Dragon Showrunner Explains The Traits Of Three Dragons; Syrax, Caraxes And Vhagar

The co-creators of the spin-off series, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik define the new age of dragons and describe their gradual appearance and characteristics. According to Condal, when a dragon is born in the original series, it's a miracle because they haven't existed for 150 years at that time.

Only the three dragons owned by Daenerys Targaryen¡ªViserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon¡ªwere given considerable screen time in the series Game of Thrones. Earlier, before the show started streaming, the showrunner reportedly revealed that up to 17 distinct dragons will be featured in House of the Dragons, though it was said that just 9 of them will make an appearance in the first season.

As reported by Collider, Miguel Sapochnik, the show's co-creator, disclosed that these dragons have distinct personalities, colours, shapes, and forms. He added that George RR Martin genuinely desired colourful dragons. He said, "At this point in history, there have never been as many dragons in the world since the time of old Valyria when there were a thousand dragons alive. I thought it was great, the idea that dragons are reptiles. And if you look at reptiles, they traditionally have very, very colourful coats."

Initial Dragon - Syrax

Rhaenyra's she-dragon Syrax, who serves as the show's protagonist, have a major part to play. Despite not being as powerful or aggressive in battle as Caraxes, Syrax is larger than the majority of dragons. Rhaenyra gave Syrax the name of a Valyrian goddess, and she has lovely yellow scales.

Ryan discussed how the show's initial dragon, Syrax, is introduced. He stated, "Syrax was hatched to Rhaenyra when she was a child. I think the dragons that are born to their riders have a shared, deeper bond than any of the other dragons. So, she¡¯s an eagle she¡¯s built for speed, she¡¯s very proud and honourable."

Daemon¡¯s Dragon - Caraxes

Princes Aemon and Daemon Targaryen both rode Caraxes, a dragon with red scales also known as the Blood Wyrm. In the combat at the Dance of the Dragons, he was enormous and intimidating. Caraxes' prior expertise made him a terrifying opponent on the battlefield.

Condal further stated, "Vicious, and short-tempered, Caraxes has burned a lot of people and seen a lot of battles, and has earned that name of the Blood Wyrm."

The oldest and largest dragon - Vhagar

Aemond is riding Vhagar, one of the three dragons that the Targaryens used to destroy the Seven Kingdoms. One of the largest dragons in Westeros, Vhagar is only outclassed in size by Balerion. Vhagar is a bronze colour with brilliant green eyes and green-blue highlights.

Condal concluded, ¡°Vhagar is so large that she doesn¡¯t really fit anywhere anymore. Not even in the Dragonpit and that¡¯s created a bit of a loner personality in her. And she¡¯s very grumpy, she sleeps a lot. You, know she¡¯s like an old cat.¡±
