The Waterfront OTT Release Date: If you enjoy watching emotional family dramas where things are far from perfect, this upcoming series is one of those you¡¯ll want to mark your calendar for. Releasing on June 19, 2025, The Waterfront will be available to stream on Netflix. Not your usual drama, this has got heart, tension, secrets, and that slow-burn storytelling that pulls you in from episode one.
More about The Waterfront
Set in the fictional coastal town of Havenport, North Carolina, The Waterfront tells the story of the Buckley family, who¡¯ve built a fishing empire with their bare hands over decades. But now, that empire is crumbling. Harlan Buckley, played by Holt McCallany (known for Mindhunter and The Iron Claw), is the tough-as-nails family patriarch. After suffering two heart attacks, he¡¯s forced to step back from the business he built.

That leaves his wife Belle, played by Maria Bello (BEEF, A History of Violence), and their only son Cane (Jake Weary) to take the reins. But nothing is going smoothly. Their decisions get more desperate, the waters around them get murkier, and the whole family starts slipping into deep trouble. What makes the series feel thrilling is that it¡¯s inspired by true events.
Creator Kevin Williamson, yes, the same Kevin behind Scream and Dawson¡¯s Creek, said he wanted to tell a story about people trying to protect what they¡¯ve built, even if it means crossing a few moral lines. This is a family that rose from nothing and created something lasting, but now that legacy is under threat, and they¡¯ll do anything to save it.
One of the most powerful storylines comes through Bree Buckley, the daughter, played by Melissa Benoist (Supergirl, The Girls on the Bus). Bree used to manage the family¡¯s finances but lost control of her life due to alcoholism. She¡¯s now in recovery, trying to get her son back, and trying not to fall apart while the rest of the family is barely holding it together themselves.

Diller, played by Brady Hepner, doesn¡¯t want anything to do with her, and that tension hits hard, especially since he¡¯s found a father figure in his grandfather Harlan instead. The drama doesn¡¯t just stay inside the family, though. Outside forces are circling. A new bartender, Shawn Wilson, played by Rafael L. Silva, shows up with secrets of his own.
Jenna Tate, a journalist played by Humberly Gonz¨¢lez, returns to town and ends up reopening emotional wounds, including with Cane, who used to be her high school sweetheart. And then there¡¯s Topher Grace making a guest appearance as Grady, a slick businessman who wants in on the Buckley world, but not necessarily for the right reasons.
Though the town of Havenport is fictional, The Waterfront was shot entirely in North Carolina, particularly around Wilmington and Southport. These towns aren¡¯t new to the world of TV drama. They¡¯ve been backdrops for several of Kevin Williamson¡¯s earlier shows, including I Know What You Did Last Summer and Dawson¡¯s Creek.

Behind the scenes, the series brings in strong talent too. Marcos Siega, who has directed episodes of You and Dexter: New Blood, directs the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer. Along with Kevin Williamson and Ben Fast from Outerbanks Entertainment, the production comes from Universal Television.
