SC Rejects Plea Against Padmavati¡¯s Release, Says Can¡¯t Interfere Until CBFC Certifies The Film

Despite Sanjay Leela Bhansali having released a video clarifying that there is no ¡°dream sequence¡± in the movie between Alauddin Khalji and Rani Padmavati, controversy pertaining to his film Padmavati seemingly refused to die down. Several groups still demand a ban/stay on the film¡¯s release.

In the latest course of development, Supreme Court has rejected the plea seeking a stay on the film's release. The court said that unless the Censor Board Of Film Certification issues a certificate to the movie, it cannot take up this matter.

Furthermore, it said that since CBFC is an independent body, it shall not intervene in its jurisdiction. The bench comprised of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud was hearing the plea of Siddharajsinh M Chudasama and 11 others who wanted the historians to check the facts before the movie hits the screens.

Meanwhile, the Allahabad Court court also asked petitioner Kamta Prasad Singhal, according to whom the movie shows the practice of Sati and hence propagates it, to take his plea to the CBFC. Having said that, the bench including justices Vikram Nath and Abdul Moin refused to interfere in the matter.

The petitioner had pleaded that according to Sati (Prevention) Act, the practice was banned and even its propagation.

Meanwhile, several groups including the Rajput Karni Sena have threatened the makers to burn cinema halls if the movie releases. They feel that Bhansali has distorted historical facts by showing the love-angle between Alauddin Khalji and Rani Padmavati. However, SLB has been denying any such scene is a part of the movie.

Starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati is slated to release on Dec. 1.
