Who is G.D Naidu or Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu?
Fondly called the 'Edison of India', G.D Naidu or Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu was an Indian inventor, who was born to a Telugu-speaking family on March 23, 1893.
Naidu, a third-standard school dropout worked at his father's farm when he saw a 1912 model Rudge motorcycle that belonged to a British officer.
As a teenager, Naidu was so smitten by the bike that he moved to Coimbatore leaving everything behind. He worked as a waiter at a hotel to save enough to buy the bike.
Interestingly, Naidu dismantled his bike to study its design and structure and that's how he learned about automobiles. He worked as a mechanic before working at a cotton mill.
He even went on to start a cotton business but failed.
Later, Naidu got a loan of Rs 4,000 from a Coimbatore-based industrialist, Robert Stanes. With the money, Naidu bought a motor coach and began his transport business in 1920.
A few years later, he named his transport business 'Universal Motor Service (UMS)' which became one of the largest public transport services in India.
He opened a company and generated employment opportunities for the public.
Naidu carved a niche for himself in Tamil Nadu through his innovations and entrepreneurial ventures. He developed India¡¯s first indigenous motor, with the help of D Balasundaram Naidu in the year 1937.
He also went on to invent devices that made everyday life simple and was instrumental in setting up India¡¯s first Polytechnic college in 1945, now called 'The Government Polytechnic of Coimbatore.'
India¡¯s Edison GD Naidu died on January 4, 1974.
If reports are to be believed, Mithran R Jawahar will be helming the film based on the Indian inventor.
