When she was asked if Heard would pay a $10.35 million judgment, the attorney clarified, "Oh, no¡ªabsolutely not," hinting that her client didn't have enough money.?
There have been reactions since Johnny Depp won the defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard. The high-profile trial created a lot of buzz on social media. After Amber Heard lost the trial, her lawyer said she "absolutely" plans to appeal the defamation verdict.
Amber Heard's attorney Elaine Charlson Bredehoft appeared on Today show after the trial verdict to speak about her client.
On Wednesday, a Virginia jury awarded Depp $10,350,000 after concluding that Heard did make defamatory statements about him in her 2018 Washington Post op-ed.
Heard, who countersued Depp, was also awarded $2 million for Depp's lawyer calling her abuse allegations a "hoax."
Talking about the trial, Heard's lawyer Elaine said she "absolutely" plans to appeal the verdict¡ª "and she has some excellent grounds for it."
When she was asked if Heard would pay a $10.35 million judgment, the attorney clarified, "Oh, no¡ªabsolutely not," hinting that her client didn't have enough money.
Slamming Depp's legal team, Bredehoft said attempts were made to "demonize" her client and "suppress" evidence during the six-week trial.
She also added that she was kept out of Heard's "very significant" medical records, dating back to 2012, in which she spoke to a therapist about Depp's alleged abuse.
Among the evidence, including text messages, was one from Depp's assistant that said, "'When I told him he kicked you, he cried.'"(Johnny Depp maintained a consistent stance in court that he never abused Heard, claiming instead that she was abusive toward him.)
Bredehoft went on to say that the jury must not have believed Heard's testimony, including a claim that Johnny sexually assaulted her with a bottle.
She added, "That's because [Heard] was demonized here. A number of things were allowed in this court that should not have been allowed, and it caused the jury to be confused."
She also said that the jury could have been 'heavily' influenced by the media trial and social media outburst of support towards Depp.
"There's no way they couldn't have been influenced. And it was horrible. [The coverage] really, really was lopsided" to Depp's benefit. "It was like the Roman Colosseum."
She went on to add that everything was made worse by "cameras in the courtroom," which she "argued against ... because of the sensitive nature of" the case. "But it made it a zoo."
Talking about her client Heard, she added, "One of the first things she said is, 'I am so sorry to all those women out there. This is a setback for all women in and outside the courtroom. She feels the burden of that."
According to Bredehoft, the jury's verdict sent out a 'horrible message for women' with their verdict against Heard. She said,
"It's a significant setback because that's exactly what it means. Unless you pull out your phone and you video your spouse or your significant other beating you, effectively, you won't be believed."
