Anurag Kashyap Blames Aditya Chopra For Failure Of YRF Movies, Says He Controls Filmmakers
Weighing on why Shamshera failed at the box office, Anurag Kashyap blamed Aditya Chopra for controlling filmmakers and dictating them what to do. He praised Karan Johar.
Without mincing his words, Anurag Kashyap has revealed why Yash Raj Films' movies are failing one after the other. The recent example was Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Shamshera and Akshay Kumar's Prithviraj - which turned out to be flops at the box office.
Anurag Kashyap has now revealed what YRF's "biggest problem" is.
He says Aditya Chopra should not dictate to filmmakers what to do and should rather change his directorial methods.
In a conversation with Galatta Plus, Anurag Kashyap said, "If you see Hindi films, what is not on screen cannot be cinema to them. The biggest problem with YRF is the trial room effect. You take a story & you want to make a Pirates of the Caribbean out of it. So it becomes Thugs of Hindostan. You take a story & you want to make Mad Max: Fury Road out of it so it becomes Shamshera.
"So, the thing is you never make the original root of the idea into a film because in your head that can¡¯t be cinema because it has not been made. So the first reaction is like ¡®Yaar this is so good, this can be like Mad Max: Fury Road. Let¡¯s make it like that. Let¡¯s not spare any cost.¡¯ And the moment you head in that direction, you are cheating yourself, especially in today¡¯s time. It would¡¯ve worked three years back. The same Shamshera would¡¯ve really worked 2-3 years back. At least much more than how it has worked now.¡±
Furthermore, talking about a change that he would like to bring in the industry, Anurag Kashyap said that he would bring in a lot of outsiders and wouldn't dictate them how to make films. He would rather give then a free hand. "Here one person sitting in a cave who doesn¡¯t know the world outside is dictating how everybody should be making their film & telling them what to do. So, obviously, you are digging your own grave."
He then showered praises on Karan Johar for hiring the man who criticised him the most.
"Look at Karan Johar, he hired his biggest critic Somen Mishra and gave Dharmatics & said ¡®Run the company and what you say that I lack, create space for that.¡¯ What did Somen do? He brought in a bunch of outsiders & interesting voices & empowered them. Now, that¡¯s the way to go," he said.
Anurag Kashyap said that the reason why South Indian movies are working better than Hindi films is that no one is telling them, "aise film banao ya waise film banao".
