Anurag Kashyap Talks About His Struggle Days, Reveals Paying Rs 6 To Sleep On Mumbai¡¯s Footpath

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is known for cult classics like Gangs Of Wasseypur and Dev D. Kashyap who arrived in Mumbai in 1993 to struggle and ace a place in showbiz has revealed to have spent sleepless nights in his early days. Anurag while discussing his odd days in the Mayanagri also talked about his lowest phase.

Although Anurag had access to sleep in Imtiaz Ali¡¯s college and keep a suitcase in Prithvi theatre, he also saw days of sleeping on footpaths.

In a conversation on Mashable India¡¯s The Bombay Journey, Kashyap said in Hindi, ¡°There was a garden in the middle of the Juhu circle back then; it used to be a roundabout without any signals. We used to sleep here, but sometimes they¡¯d kick us out. Then we¡¯d go to the Versova link road, where there was a big footpath. People used to sleep there in a line. But you had to pay Rs 6 to sleep there.¡±

Anurag faced back-to-back problems with his films that broke the filmmaker down.

After co-writing Ram Gopal Varma¡¯s Satya, Anurag broke out. His directorial debut Paanch was stalled. His second film, Black Friday fell into chaotic trouble just a day before release. He shared, ¡°I locked myself in a room, and that¡¯s when the drinking began. It was over. I used to drink heavily for a year and a half.¡±

¡°Aarti (Bajaj, ex-wife) kicked me out of the house. My daughter was only four years old then. That was a difficult phase. I was depressed. Paanch had stalled, Black Friday had stalled, Allwyn Kalicharan was shelved, another film that nobody knows about was shelved, I was kicked out of Tere Naam and Kaante¡­¡±

Anurag further revealed that his personal fallouts ended up with him thinking that everyone around him is wrong. He added, ¡®I was drinking and I was fighting all these battles, and I was unceremoniously thrown out of projects I had written and I was a part of. That was a very bad phase, and it accumulated into anger, with the industry, with the system.¡¯

Recovering from all those down days of struggle, we now know where Anurag is. Reigning the industry with his off-stream yet critically acclaimed films. He was last seen helming Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat. In his credits also has projects like Dobaaraa, Ghost Stories, Manmarziyan and Black Friday.
