Punjab '95 plot
Many Sikhs were outraged when Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, at the time, implemented an army operation against militants at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, a sacred site for them, in June 1984. After Gandhi's Sikh bodyguards killed her in October, anti-Sikh riots broke out throughout northern India. As per Variety, the police had the authority to hold suspects throughout that time. Khalra looked into the cremation of thousands of unidentified dead in Punjab.
Six police officers were detained in 2005 for the kidnapping and murder of Khalra, who vanished in 1995.
The historical name "Ghallughara," which was used to refer to the Sikh massacres in 1746, 1762, and 1984, was the initial title of the film.
