Dual citizenship is prohibited in India.

According to the Citizenship Act of 1955, any person who is born in India or has Indian parentage is by default considered an Indian citizen. Moreover, if an individual from India acquires citizenship of another country, the person automatically loses Indian citizenship.

There have been several discussions and debates on whether India should allow people to hold dual citizenship considering the large number of Indian diaspora worldwide. However, the Indian government is yet to take steps towards implementing dual citizenship.

After the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed in 2019, it became easier for certain religious minorities from neighboring countries to acquire Indian citizenship.

However, this does not apply to individuals who hold citizenship from another country.

1. Alia Bhatt

Gangubai Kathiawadi actress, Alia is the daughter of filmmaker, Mahesh Bhatt and his wife, Soni Razdan, who is of British origin. Hence, Alia holds both Indian and British passports and citizenship.

2. Akshay Kumar

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar was born to Aruna Bhatia and Hari Om Bhatia in Amritsar, Punjab. While he was brought up in Delhi, he renounced his Indian citizenship in 2011 and accepted his ¡®honorary Canadian citizenship¡¯, and holds a Canadian passport. However, in 2022, the 'Khiladi of Bollywood' was awarded by the income tax department for paying the highest tax in the country. The actor re-applied to acquire his Indian citizenship.

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone was born to former badminton player, Prakash Padukone and his wife, Ujjala Padukone in Denmark. The Pathaan actress was raised in Bangalore. By birth, Deepika holds Danish citizenship.

Indian model Amy Jackson predominantly worked in Tamil, Telegu, and Hindi films. However, she was born in the United Kingdom. Hence, she is by birth a British citizen and holds a UK passport.

Apart from having Indian citizenship, 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara' actress Kalki, holds French citizenship as she hails from a French family even though she was born in Puducherry, India.

Veteran actress, Helen originally hails from Burma and was born to an Anglo-Indian father, Jairag, and a Burmese mother, Marlene Richardson. Thus, she is by default a citizen of that country. However, after marrying Salman Khan's father Salim Khan, she acquired the citizenship of Indian.
