Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets The Elephant Whisperers' Couple Bomman and Bellie whose story brought home India's Oscar this year.
India¡¯s Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Karnataka in the early hours of 9th March and met the Oscar-winning stars Bomman and Bellie. The couple who inspired Kartiki Gonsalves¡¯ The Elephant Whisperers posed with PM Modi in several pictures that have now gone viral.

The Prime Minister sported donned an all Khaki coloured look with a jungle safari hat as he spent time with the couple and the star Raghu.
During his visit to the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, PM also launched the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA) in order to curb poaching and illegal wildlife trade. He further inaugurated the Commemoration of 50 Years of Project Tiger and released the publication Amrit Kaal Ka Vision for Tiger Conservation.

For the unversed, Amrit Kaal Ka Vision is a summary report of the 5th cycle of Management Effective Evaluation of Tiger Reserves. PM Modi further released a summary report of All India Tiger Estimation (5th cycle) and a commemorative coin on the occasion of 50 years of Project Tiger completion.

The official handle of Rashtrapati Bhawan tweeted with a picture of their meeting, ¡°President Droupadi Murmu met the makers of Oscar-winning documentary 'The Elephant Whisperers', Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga. She congratulated them on winning the award and praised them for showcasing India's tradition of conservation and living in harmony with nature.¡±

This 41-minute documentary which is available to watch on Netflix won Best Documentary - Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards earlier this year. The heartwarming tale of a couple who raises two orphan elephants was nominated against Haul Out, How Do You Measure A Year?, The Martha Mitchell Effect, and Stranger At The Gate. India¡¯s other Oscar this year was for the Naatu Naatu song.

Guneet who was not allowed to speak because of time constraints on Oscar's stage later told the Bombay Times, ¡°There was a shock on my face. I just wanted to say it's India's first Oscar in Indian production, which is such a huge thing. My heart started racing as I couldn't have come so far and not be heard. Western media is pulling up The Academy that I did not get to speak.¡±

¡°People are so offended that I did not get the chance to deliver my speech. There are videos and tweets online expressing disappointment that I couldn¡¯t get to speak. This was India's moment taken away from me.¡±
