SS Rajamouli On RRR Being Called A Queer Film, ¡®Can¡¯t Be Worried About People¡¯s Opinions¡¯
SS Rajamouli's RRR was received as a gay story by many people in the west. The filmmaker has now addressed those claims in an 'unapologetic' manner.
SS Rajamouli¡¯s RRR is a global sensation. Starring Ram Charan as Alluri Sitaram Raju and Jr NTR as Komaram Bheem, the film has grossed over 1200 crores globally and has become one of the most successful films in the history of Indian Cinema. Conversations from the west quoted this film as a queer story, to which Rajamouli now has replied.
Soon after RRR was released on Netflix, it saw a boom among western countries and many called it ¡®heartwarmingly gay¡¯. People appreciated the chemistry between the film¡¯s lead and perceived it as a queer story. Podcaster Dwelling has back then tweeted, ¡°Jaw-dropping action, yes. Adventure, yes. Revenge, yes. But why did non¡¯e of you tell me #RRRMovie was so heartwarmingly gay??¡±

In response to all such reception, SS Rajamouli has a reply where he feels that he¡¯s ¡®unapologetic¡¯ about the male friendship he has shown in RRR.
Speaking to rogerebert.com, the Baahubali director said, "One thing I have noticed, once social media exploded and various people started commenting on various topics in any art form¡ªI¡¯ll talk about film, because that¡¯s my area¡ªfilmmakers started taking (those comments) seriously and trying to be politically correct about everything. If you¡¯re trying not to offend this person and not to offend that person, in essence, you¡¯re losing the flavor of your story."
"You can¡¯t be continuously worried about what people are going to say. That would be a very dishonest way of filmmaking. As a storyteller, my allegiance is to the story, not to anyone else. Everyone else comes later. Nowadays, I see two guys afraid to even put their hands over one another¡¯s shoulders. They worry about what people might think. What the bloody hell? You¡¯re friends! Every gesture doesn¡¯t need to have a meaning to it. You¡¯re friends. What¡¯s wrong with showing that? I don¡¯t know", he concluded.
SS Rajamouli in another interview was also asked what went right with RRR that despite showing the Britishers in a bad light, the film did so well in the west.
As per Indian Express, the filmmaker said at a US event, "At the beginning of the film you see the disclaimer card. Even if you miss it, it¡¯s not a history lesson. It¡¯s a story. The audience in general understands it. If a British is playing the villain, they understand that I am not saying all the Britishers are villains. If my heroes are Indians, they understand that all Indians are heroes."
He added, "In this film, a particular guy is a villain and a particular guy is a hero. They automatically understand. They may not be knowledgeable about everything but their emotional intelligence is very high. Once we understand that as a storyteller, we don¡¯t have to worry about other peripheral things."
