After an entire social media movement #FreeBritney, her father has finally agreed to step down from her conservatorship.
What is a conservatorship? It is when a judge appoints a person or an organisation to take care of an adult who cannot take care of themselves.
Here is a timeline of how Britney Spears got to a point where her life had to be controlled by her father under a conservatorship.
2007 and 2008: Britney Spears was behaving erratically in public. She had gone bald and even attacked a photographer¡¯s car with an umbrella. She was hospitalised and placed on 5150 hold for psychiatric treatment.
2008: The pop sensation was put under a conservatorship and her father was given the right to oversee her decisions about her health as well as wealth.
2009 to 2019: After regular check-ins, her conservatorship kept extending.
2011: Despite all the difficulties in her life, she released her album Femme Fatale.
2019: Her father requested the court to extend the conservatorship to more states -- Louisiana, Hawaii, and Florida -- outside of California.
2019: After being accused of physically abusing Spears' son Sean, Jamie stepped down as Britney¡¯s primary conservator. Her care manager Jodi Montgomery took over his duties.
April 2019: Britney stayed in a mental facility after her father became ill suffering a health emergency.
July 2020: Britney¡¯s brother, Bryan Spears spoke about the conservatorship. "She's been in this thing for quite some time now. Obviously, there was a need for it in the beginning. Now, they've made some changes, and all we can do is hope for the best." He said, "Conservatorship has "been a great thing for our family, to this point, and [we] keep hoping for the best."
He added that Britney is not happy with it. "I know what she wants but, at the end of the day, what is the reality of that? What is the practicality of that? So are you going to call and make reservations for yourself today?" He said ending the conservatorship would be an "adjustment" and joked, She's the worst driver in the world¡ªI'm not lying. I mean, bless her heart, she really is not a good driver, and she hasn't had to do that."
September 2020: Britney was unhappy with her father appointing a co-conservator of her estate. She also got her lawyers to file to oppose sealing parts of the conservatorship. She wanted it to be public hinting at support for the #FreeBritney movement.
She had also filed a request in August to permanently replace her father with Jodi Montgomery.
November 2020: Britney lost her bid to remove her father from her conservatorship.
December 2020: Conservatorship gets extended to September 2021.
February 5, 2021: A documentary showing details of Britney's rise to fame is released. Once again, people question wh she is under the conservatorship of her father when she doesn't want to be.
February 9, 2021: Britney's boyfriends Sam Asghari speaks out against her father. "Now it's important for people to understand that I have zero respect for someone trying to control our relationship and constantly throwing obstacles our way. In my opinion, Jamie is a total dick. I won't be going into details because I've always respected our privacy but at the same time, I didn't come to this country to not be able to express my opinion and freedom."
February 9, 2021: Her lawyers ask the judge to end her conservatorship.
March 2021: Britney¡¯s lawyer asks for Jodi Montgomer to be named her conservator.
June 23, 2021: Britney makes a 24-minute statement in court before Los Angeles judge Brenda Penny that had some chilling details. Post this, #FreeBritney movement gained momentum and many celebrities showed support to her.
June 30, 2021: Court denies Britney's request to remove her father from his role as co-conservator of her estate.
July, 2021: Britney's attorney and manager resign.
July 14, 2021: Britney hires her own lawyer, and says she wants to file charges against Jamie. Her new lawyer then files a request for a new conservator.
July 30, 2021: Britney's medical team supports her decision of Jamie's removal.
August 12, 2021: Jamie agrees to step down as Britney's conservator.
