Just like the word Gullak (also known as Piggy Bank), this is a story that many from the recent generations won¡¯t understand/relate to. A typical lower middle class family, the Mishras struggle to get past the most trivial things.
The family consists of four members - the father Santosh Mishra, who works in the electricity department, mother Shanti Mishra who¡¯s a housewife and two sons - Anu and Aman. Anu aka Anand is a civil engineer who is shown jobless right from season one and is prepping for SSC exam. Aman is studying in school. Another very important character is the Gullak - which not just contains loose money but also several dreams of the Mishra household.
Adding to Anu¡¯s troubles is not just joblessness but also the food that is cooked by his mum. She calls it Tahiri but for the lad it¡¯s just yellow rice cooked with potatoes. He calls it disappointment in the name of food. Another recurring character is their neighbour, Bittu ki mummy - Shanti Mishra¡¯s close friend and the khabri aunty of the colony. She pokes her nose in everyone¡¯s affairs.
The ordinary plot of the show is what makes it so extraordinary. The makers have managed to narrate the simple tale with so much emotion that one cannot help but become a part of this family¡¯s day-to-day life. Right from pani ki motor issues to sibling revelry, its relativity is something that acts as a USP of Gullak.
The trailer of the upcoming season three dropped recently and once again it has hit the right nerve. Before we get to the next set of ¡®naye hisse and naye kisse¡¯ of this beloved show, it¡¯s only vital that we quickly recall the last two seasons and prepare ourselves.
Season 1
Bittu¡¯s mummy brings with herself a bag full of bad news. The old committee¡¯s funds have gone missing as the cable¡¯s operator¡¯s boy ran away with it. Now, her husband has invested in a new one and with that money they are soon going to be renovating their house. This makes Shanti very jealous and she makes it a mission to renovate the Mishra house as well. The entire family brainstorms about how to execute the dream and thus begins the planning - budgets, floor plan etc.
The family comes to the conclusion that it¡¯s too expensive and they might have to take a loan. Shanti insists that albeit late, the house needs to be made perfectly. Soon, the family parks this idea and moves on with a bowl full of ice cream to lift up their spirits.
The next big issue comes in the form of a science chart that Aman has to make for his school project. He asks for his elder brother¡¯s help but like a typical sibling he denies it. This soon turns into a scuffle between the boys ending in cuts, scrapes and wounds. Despite the father's intervention, the two boys fail to make amends. The mother then taunts Annu over his lack of job and orders him to help his brother. This riles up the elder Mishra boy and he storms out of the house. Santosh Mishra then takes things in his own hands and tries to make the chart but it ends in a disaster. Eventually, Annu brings home another chart paper and finally does the task to utmost perfection. Once again, things settle down and we see harmony presiding in their little home.
Sunday finds Mishras in yet another complex situation. The water motor has stopped working and it soon escalates into a full time melodramatic fight. The couple resorts to name-calling and somehow expresses regrets about marrying each other. Santosh Mishra then cleans the house and makes aloo paranthas to win the missus and in the end emerge victorious.
Some neighbour buying a scooty leads to yet another discussion whether the Mishras should also buy one. The discussion becomes heated when Santosh suggests that instead of a scooty, they should buy a bullet motorcycle. Eventually, the power cut brings with itself a decision - neither scooty nor bike, the Mishras will get an inverter.
On Rakshabandhan, Annu gets to know that he couldn¡¯t clear the SSC exam and is nervously anticipating his parents¡¯ reaction. He runs from pillar to post to hide the truth from them. However, when they find out the result, they encourage him to give it another try and not lose hope or resort to self-harm. The family then breaks the Gullak to collect funds and buy a gift for Santosh¡¯s sister on the occasion of Rakshabandhan. This concludes the first season of the show.
Season 2
It opens to Sharad Purnima and kheer being prepared by the mothership. Soon the family gets the electricity bill and it turns into a full blown debate - who is behind such a huge bill? The discussion then leads to accusations on Santosh Mishra by his family. They are upset that he is honest and doesn¡¯t make extra money above his stipulated salary. They give him an example of his fellow colleague Dubey ji who has built a home of four floors with bribe money. Just when Santosh Mishra decides to go down that dark path, they see a news flash that Dubey and four other employees have been arrested on corruption charges. Santosh then highlights the fact that his honesty saved him.
Bittu¡¯s mother reveals that the colony has organised a free health check-up camp. Shanti Mishra is then diagnosed with diabetes. The family urges her to cancel the kitty party that is supposed to take place at their home the next day. The men then take it upon themselves to do the cooking. They soon realise how she single-handedly does all the work and they get emotional about her hardships. The kitty party ends with the ladies giving envelopes of money to Shanti.
The Mishra men excitedly decide that with that money they will purchase an LED TV. However, in that very moment a juicer-mixer-grinder gets delivered at their home and they come to know that Shanti ordered it for herself with the gift money. She then tells them that she has been toiling in the kitchen for over 25 years and now that she has diabetes, she needs the machine to help ease her work. The men soon realise their folly and the family rejoices.
Aman¡¯s boards are a big cause of worry for the Mishras as he lacks dedication. One night before the exam, he is caught secretly attending the screening of the India-Pakistan World Cup match. A lot of drama follows with taunts flying in all directions. In the end, Aman passes the exams with flying colors and comes in top 3 scorers and the family also accepts Annu¡¯s failures and motivates him to keep trying.
Gullak stars Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, and Harsh Mayar in the lead. The third season is set to release on April 7 and can be streamed on SonyLiv.
