1782 - George Washington creates the Purple Heart

The Purple Heart was first created on August 7, 1782, by General George Washington, the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Originally known as the Badge of Military Merit, it was awarded to three revolutionary soldiers in 1783.

1907 - Pitcher Walter Johnson

MLB Washington Senators legendary pitcher Walter Johnson won the first of his 416 career wins, 7-2 v Cleveland on August 7, 1907. He played his entire 21-year baseball career in Major League Baseball as a right-handed pitcher for the Washington Senators from 1907 to 1927.

1959 - First Satellite Image of Earth

On August 7, 1959, the Explorer 6 satellite launched atop a Thor-Able rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Its mission was to study Earth's electrical and magnetic fields in the upper atmosphere, but it also carried a device for scanning and photographing cloud cover.

1960 - Ivory Coast Independence

The West African country known as C?te d'Ivoire gained its independence from France after being a member of the French Community for 2 years. Ivory Coast became a French Colony in 1893 under the leadership of explorer Louis Gustave Binger. Felix Houphouet-Boigny became the first president of the independent country and remained in office until his death in 1993.

1990 - Operation Desert Shield

The US deployed troops to Saudi Arabia and began Operation Desert Shield. The aim was to destabilize the American foothold in the Anbar province over the course of six months.

2008 - War Between Russia and Georgia Breaks Out

The conflict began over South Ossetia and Abkhazia, two breakaway regions of Georgia. When the two provinces broke away from Georgia in the early 1990s and most of the international community did not recognize their independence. Russia on the other hand, backed them and placed peacekeeping forces in the two regions. In 2008, tensions escalated between the two countries after Russia moved a large number of troops in the area. The war ended with Russian victory and with Georgia losing parts of South Ossetia and Abkhazia to Russia.

On 7th August 1941, India¡¯s Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore passed away in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.

Tagore was known not just as a writer, but also as a poet, philosopher, painter, educator and social reformer who has been credited with changing the landscape of literature and music of the region. He was also the composer of two National Anthems; Jana Gana Mana for India and Amar Shonar Bangla for Bangladesh.
