History and Significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas

The Kargil War was part of the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan that started in 1971, and led to the creation of Bangladesh. Although there were not many direct conflicts in the years following, both countries competed for control over strategic areas, including the Siachen Glacier.

In 1998, both India and Pakistan conducted nuclear tests, which increased tensions. In February 1999, they signed the Lahore Declaration to seek a peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue. However, during the winter of 1998-1999, Pakistani forces secretly crossed the Line of Control (LOC) and took control of strategic positions in the Drass and Batalik Sectors of Kargil.

Initially, Indian troops thought the infiltrators were terrorists. But it soon became clear that it was a well-planned military operation. India responded by sending over 200,000 troops to regain the area. The conflict, which resulted in the loss of 527 Indian soldiers, ended on July 26, 1999, when Pakistani forces withdrew, marking India's victory. This day is now known as Kargil Vijay Diwas, a time to remember and honor the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers.
